Scientists develop pill that helps in Bre.ast cancer diagnosis

Researchers at the University of Michigan have developed a pill that makes tumours light up when exposed to infrared light. The researchers say the concept has been tested and proven effective in mice. “We overspend $4 billion per year on the diagnosis and treatment of cancers that women would never die from,” said research leader Greg Thurber. “If we go to molecular imaging, we can see which tumors need to be treated. “It’s actually based on a failed drug. “It binds to the target, but it doesn’t do anything, which makes it perfect for imaging.” The researchers attached a molecule that fluoresces when it is struck with infrared light to the drug. Then, they gave the drug to mice that had Bre.ast cancer, and they saw the tumours light up. The targeting molecule has already been shown to make it through the stomach unscathed, and the liver also gives it a pass, so it can travel through the bloodstream. The move could also catch cancers that would have gone undetected. By provi

Study: Lonely people more likely to have bad shopping habits

Lonely, non-empathetic people are more likely to have bad shopping habits. “Consumers very often behave immorally. And while these behaviors are often legal, they are unethical and cost retailers billions each year,” said Jenny Jiao, assistant professor of management at Binghamton University. The researchers gave the example of how consumers purchase an item, mostly clothing, then return it after use, intentionally taking advantage of the return policy. “Wardrobing is when people buy an item, use it and then return it,” said Jiao. “Someone may buy a big-screen TV for Super Bowl Sunday, only to return it on Monday; or they may buy a nice outfit for a night out, only to return it the next day.” While there are numerous reasons a consumer may partake in this kind of behaviour, Jiao and fellow researcher Jing Wang of the University of Iowa focused on whether loneliness could be a factor. “There are a lot of dark sides to loneliness. Past research has established that feeling lonely

Journalists should not be targeted for doing their jobs – Paradigm Initiative

Tope OG.undipe, Director of Programs at Paradigm Initiative, says the focus of arrests and prosecution for comments made online have shifted from ordinary citizens to journalists across Africa. She said journalists should not be targeted for doing their legitimate jobs by African governments that seek to silent media and stifle press freedom. “One of the key developments noted in our Digital Rights in Africa Report 2017 was the increased wave of At-tacks on the press in Africa. In 2016, most of the arrests for comments made online were of ordinary citizens, in 2017 the focus of arrests and prosecutions for comments made online shifted to journalists. Journalists should not be targeted for doing their legitimate jobs, OG.undipe said in a statement to mark the 2018 World Press Freedom Day. She noted that the celebration of the 2018 World Press Day came at a time of increased press At-tacks across Africa, “an unfortunate reality that is partly behind shrinking civic spaces in the cont

EXTRA: Buhari’s administration and the love for ‘technicality’

President Muhammadu Buhari “had a technical stopover in London and will be on his way back soon”. This was the response of Garba Shehu, Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, on Thursday, when contacted on why Buhari has not arrived Nigeria almost 48 hours after leaving the United States of America. Shehu’s response, and the use of the word ‘technical’, reminds one of the many times Buhari or some members of his inner circle had used the term to wriggle the presidency out of knotty situations. Given the fact that Buhari had spent more than 150 days of 2017 in hospital in the UK, many Nigerians are wont to jump to the conclusion that whenever the President is said to be in London, he most probably must have gone to see his doctors. Hence the need for Shehu to clear the air on that this particular stop-over was due to technical – not medical  – reasons. This is the third time the term ‘technical’ is featuring significantly in the lifespan of the Buhari administrat

Emmanuel Onwubiko: Nigeria’s descent to repression

As the World marks the international press freedom day, one person who can be used as a model to showcase the state of the observance of the freedom of expression is the senator representing Kogi West Mr. Dino Melaye who was wheeled to the federal high court in Lokoja and Sl.ammed with some politically motivated charges of conspiracy to commit crime and other nebulous affiliate charges. Worst still, the presiding judge shows how weak and compromised the judicial arm is by not granting bail to an accused who was brought to court almost half dead but rather remanded him to prison custody according to early reports from Lokoja in Kogi State. This senator is unarguably the most vocal amongst the 106 senators of the Federal Republic in the current dispensation. Dino Melaye could express his opinions freely because he found the atmosphere of liberalism and liberty within the ambience of the Senate under a person considered as a democrat to the core Senator Bukola Saraki who is the Preside

Nine Nigerian governors in support of state police – El-Rufai

Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has said the issue of state policing should be looked at again, noting that it would provide a new opportunity to strengthen security in the country. According to him, nine governors were already in support of the creation of state police. El-Rufai made the remarks on Wednesday in Kaduna when members of Senior Executive Course 40 of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies visited him. According to him, managing security requires exploring the root cause and taking effective measures to tackle the challenges. The governor identified the menace of street gangs, kid.napping, ar.med robbery as some of the security challenges in the state. “We have been working with police to curtail that, and also prosecuting offenders with stiffer penalties,” he said. According to him, the indigene- settler phenomenon has contributed immensely to creating deep division among the people of Nigeria. “Until we retrace ourselves and

Download For Free: The App Lets You Upload to Instagram Directly From Your Desktop Dubbed Windowed

Windowed is a simple new app that finally lets you upload to Instagram directly from your Mac or PC desktop. Created by photographer and programmer Felix Sun, the app is essentially a tiny mobile browser that you can log into Instagram’s website through. We previously posted a tutorial on how you can upload Instagram photos from your computer by making Instagram think you’re using a mobile browser. The reason this works is that Instagram’s website allows for photo uploading, but only if you’re visiting it through your smartphone — open up the same website on your computer browser and you won’t see the upload options. What Windowed does is provide a stripped down mobile browser for computers that’s dedicated to posting photos to Instagram. “Instagram already provides the functionality to upload photos through a web browser, but sadly this feature is locked to mobile web browsers only,” Sun writes. “Windowed overcomes this issue by pretending to be a mobile browser, allowing you to

Champions League: Referee Skomina regrets not awarding Roma penalty against Liverpool

Slovenian referee, Damir Skomina, has reportedly regretted his actions in the Champions League semifinal’s second leg between Roma and Liverpool in Rome on Wednesday night. Trancredi Palmeri, a top Italinan reporter, said the referee was left feeling “destroyed” after the Reds knocked Roma out of the Champions League. The Slovenian official was in the middle of the park as the Reds secured their place in the final against Real Madrid. Despite scoring four in the Stadio Olimpico in the second leg, Roma felt aggrieved to have not netted more as they searched to overturn a 5-2 deficit from Anfield last week. And on another night, the Italian outfit could have pulled off the remarkable comeback. This is because a number of decisions went against Roma towards the end of the second leg. Edin Dzeko was wrongly flagged offside before being taken down by Loris Karius in the second half, before Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold blocked a goal-bound shot with his arm on the hour mark.
